In my previous blog (Thoughts on the future of Digital Marketing), I’ve mentioned of how Virtual Reality (VR) can grow to be more than a gaming device. In this blog, we will talk about VR not only in the gaming industry but VR real world applications that affect digital marketing.
For those of you who are new to this term, VR is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Unlike traditional user interfaces, VR places the user inside an experience. Instead of viewing a screen in front of them, users are immersed and able to interact with 3D worlds. By stimulating as many senses as possible, such as vision, hearing, touch, even smell, the computer is transformed into a gatekeeper to this artificial world. The most famous VR application today is for the gaming industry, you may recognize some of these VR headsets on the right.
As I’ve mentioned, there are numerous real-world applications for VR other than gaming that may change digital marketing strategies that companies currently use:
- VR could be applied to other entertainment industries besides gaming such as virtual museums, theater, interactive performances, virtual theme parks and discovery centers. What is impressive about VR is that the users can interact with 3D worlds and that our senses are utilized to receive the best possible experience. VR can enable the users to engage with exhibits in ways which were previously forbidden or unknown. This could be a potentially huge advertising schemes for companies as now they can put their ads only virtually and not physically in the various locations that the users choose to visit via the VR.
- VR could be applied to healthcare such as surgery simulation, phobia treatment, and skills training. As you can see in the chart below, it is predicted that healthcare will be the second largest industry that is predicted to utilize VR and AR.
- VR could also be applied in business. VR could be used for training new employees without being physically in the building, virtual tours of a business environment, and also a 360 degrees view of a product that the business is selling. This is clearly the most straightforward use of VR that have a huge impact in digital marketing. Marketers can now use VR to showcase their products to buyers all over the word. In addition, buyers can view the product thoroughly and freely as they like.
What I’ve mentioned is only a few of how VR can be utilized in other industry and how they can impact the digital marketing strategy of a company. So what do you guys think? Will VR be a huge hit or not? and what other industry do you think VR could be utilized for? Feel free to leave your opinion on the comment below. 🙂
